Overview of the campaign

One Human Family, Food for All s a confederation-wide campaign by the global Catholic confederation Caritas Internationalis aimed at ending hunger by 2025. Launched in December 2013, the aims of the global campaign are:

  • Raise awareness of hunger crises
  • Explore how Caritas programmes are helping families feed themselves
  • Encourage regular people to learn more about hunger and ways to solve it
  • Call on governments around the world to guarantee a right to food for all
  • End systemic hunger by 2025

Caritas has been working to fight hunger for decades, so that’s not new. But this was the first time all Caritas members worldwide joined together to share ideas and act as one voice on this topic.

Why?

Food is essential to living a dignified life. It is also central to the Christian faith since bread is transformed into the body of Christ and shared with the faithful during the celebration of the Eucharist.

With the conclusion of the Millennium Development Goals in 2015, the Caritas confederation decided to put its collective efforts, and join with many other organisations to contribute to the post-2016 development process and bring an end to the suffering of millions of hungry people around the world.

What?

The campaign called for action on all levels – individually, nationally and globally.

Individually – all people were invited to look within ourselves realise our own role in ending hunger. Individuals made changes in their personal lives through practical actions, spiritual prayer, education, and engaging local leaders.

Nationally – Caritas members worked to address hunger in their country through working with families experiencing hunger, raising awareness of the issue, and advocating to their government leaders.

Globally – The campaign brought together the voices of 98 Caritas organisations from around the world in a report about what works best in reducing hunger. Caritas also advocated to the United Nations for a session on the right to food at the 2016 UN general assembly.

The One Human Family, Food for All campaign concluded in December 2015, planting the seeds of our work in ending hunger. Together, let us continue this vital work together to bring an end to the suffering of millions of hungry people around the world.
